Message from the President

For those of us of a certain age we remember the Alice Cooper song “School’s Out For Summer." I’m certain that there are many current songs that reflect the same sentiment, but what we all know is that school is definitely out for the summer. As I reflect on the soon to pass school year I am all too aware of what summer now means at the YMCA.

There was a time when it seemed that summer time was quieter at local YMCAs. I know I date myself when I tell you that in the late 60s and early 70s we were not the hot bed of activity that now consumes us from June through August. Now however, from the closing bell on the last day (do they still ring a bell?) until the school busses roll again in August, we become a true beehive of activity. Day camp will soon begin and we will take care of over 300 children each day between our two branch locations. Songs will be sung, peanut butter sandwiches consumed, sunscreen applied, and games played and played. The excitement fills the air and we all get energized from the youthful energy that surrounds us.

As you come and go to take part of your aerobic classes, fitness workouts, tennis matches and more; take time to enjoy what is happening. Watch the kids as they boat on “Lake YMCA.” See the excitement on their faces as they play “Jedi Dodge ball”! These are true sounds of an active and vibrant YMCA.

We are truly excited about the summer camp staff that is on board to provide these experiences. I had the good fortune to spend a little time with them during their staff training week. These young adults will lead the way for our young campers and have been carefully selected to be role models that truly reflect the YMCA values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. You can be proud to know what strength we have in our Southwest Florida young people, they will truly be building strong kids, strong families and strong communities.

Sincerely,

Larry Lev
