The YMCA strengthens more than muscles. It makes our community a better place in which to live.

Message from the President & CEO

January 30, 2009

Dear Members,

There is nothing I can say about the collapse of the global economy that you don’t know already.   It has affected individuals, organizations, and governments. And, of course, it has made life difficult for many in Southwest Florida. The YMCA has not escaped. But I am proud to report that through great effort and sacrifice, the Y has succeeded in living up to its mission.   Above all, the YMCA works to build Strong Kids, Strong Families and Strong Communities. Every program at the YMCA continues to be based on the core values of caring honesty, respect and responsibility. A primary goal of both the Annual Support Campaign and the organization as a whole remains maintaining the ability to offer membership to every person, regardless of their ability to pay. Our community needs the YMCA now more than ever.

Despite the troubling economy, please allow me to share these proud accomplishments from last year
  • The YMCA distributed over $470,000 in scholarship to children and families in 2008. 45% of summer camp kids and 56% of kids in child care receive scholarships.
  • The YMCA provided another $555,000 worth of free or subsidized programs in 2008.
  • The YMCA Summer Camps served 2,934 children in the summer of 2008.
  • The YMCA doubled the number of children, from 125 to 250, that are served each day in the Child Development program.
  • In 2008, a total of 2600 kids participated in youth sports. There were over 250 volunteer coaches and referees.
  • Knowing that drowning is the 2nd leading cause of accidental death in children in Florida, the YMCA provided swimming lessons to over 1500 children in the community, with 600 of those children participating for free during Splash week.
The need for financial assistance has never been greater. In order to sustain existing programs we have set a goal of raising $695,000 for the 2009 Annual Support Campaign. To make this goal we need your help.
I am posting a brochure describing YMCA programs and a pledge form for your convenience. Please consider making a contribution. I know this year has been tough for all of us but it has been even tougher on the lower income families in our community. Please consider helping those who need our help the most.

With Thanks,

Brandon Dowdy
Interim CEO
